چکیده

We studied the effects of black fat-tailed scorpion (Androctonus bicolor) venom on the activities of liver enzymes including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) in the sera of rats. The animals were subcutaneously injected with a single dose of crude Androctonus bicolor venom (200 μg/kg bodyweight) and were sacrificed at different time intervals including 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 8 h and 24 h after venom injection. There was no significant change in ALT activity in rats injected with Androctonus bicolor venom. Although Androctonus bicolor venom did not produce any change in serum AST activity until 1 h post-dosing, it significantly decreased this enzyme activity at 2 h onwards. There were significant decreases in ALP activities throughout the study though mild surges in the enzyme activity were observed at 1 h and 8 h post-dosing. There was a continued significant decrease in serum LDH activity until 8 h after Androctonus bicolor venom injection followed by normalization of LDH activity at 24 h. The activities of serum CK and GGT were significantly decreased at all the time points following Androctonus bicolor envenomation in rats. In conclusion, Androctonus bicolor envenomation in rats significantly reduced the activities of serum enzymes including AST, ALP, LDH, CK and GGT. Androctonus bicolor venom induced hypomagnesemia may account for persistently reduced activities of liver enzymes due to the cofactor role of magnesium in enzyme activities.

Elemental analysis of scorpion venoms

Scorpion venom is a rich source of biomolecules, which can perturb physiological activity of the host on envenomation and may also have a therapeutic potential. Scorpion venoms produced by the columnar cells of venom gland are complex mixture of mucopolysaccharides, neurotoxic peptides and other components. This study was aimed at cataloguing the elemental composition of venoms obtained from me...

Investigation of the Behavioral and Clinical Effects of Black Scorpion Venom in Albino Rats

Background: Aggressive behaviors in human and experimental animals have previously been described following induced pain. Aggression in rodents has been attributed to genetic and environmental factors, such as pain. A major complication of scorpion envenomation is severe pain in animals and humans. Considering that envenomation by black scorpion (Androctonus crassicauda) induces severe pain, th...

Effects of Black Scorpion Androctonus crasicuda Venom on Striated Muscle Preparation in vitro.

Effects of venom from black scorpion Androctonus crasicuda (AC) were determined on isolated chick biventer cervices nerve-muscle and mouse hemidiaphragm preparations using twitch tension method. The isolated nerves were stimulated by electrical stimulator and response to each stimulus was recorded. The venom mainly acted prejunctionally to facilitate neuromuscular activity due to an increase in...

Scorpion (Androctonus bicolor) venom exhibits cytotoxicity and induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in breast and colorectal cancer cell lines

OBJECTIVES The defective apoptosis is believed to play a major role in the survival and proliferation of neoplastic cells. Hence, the induction of apoptosis in cancer cells is one of the targets for cancer treatment. Researchers are considering scorpion venom as a potent natural source for cancer treatment because it contains many bioactive compounds. The main objective of the current study is ...
